Saint John, NB, is understandably proud of its bustling and historic City Market. The downtown landmark has been open since 1876; buyers and sellers have been passing through the wrought iron gates since they went up in 1880. The market runs the length of a city block and has a number of unique features—including three mounted moose heads, one of which has been keeping silent watch over the goings-on since 1910. The market bell, not so silent, is rung twice daily, signalling the beginning and end the day’s business.

Stop to smell the roses at Jane’s Fresh Flowers (Friday-Saturday), buy fruit wines from Winegarden Estate, enjoy organic baked goods from The Baking Stone. You’ll also find distinctive New Brunswick handcrafted items, and food vendors such as Kim’s Korean Food, and the Infusion Tea Room and Bistro—a delightful spot with a wine-serving licence, which means you can bring your own wine and enjoy it (for a small corkage fee) with lunch or an early dinner. Fresh vegetables used in Chinese and Thai dishes arrive at Pete’s Frootique every Friday.

Close to 40 vendors market their wares there during the week, with 65 sellers on Saturdays. Open Monday to Friday 7:30am to 6pm and Saturday 7:30am to 5pm.
