Saltscapes Homes into Havens 2020 Contest v2
Spring cleaning took on a whole new meaning in 2020 and we asked you to share what projects you had done around your home to spruce up and celebrate your space. When the global pandemic kept us indoors many of us picked up a paint brush and updated the do to list to find a sense of purpose when not much in the world seemed to be making sense.
As more and more of us spent more time at home than ever before, transforming our homes into our havens became the new mantra for the “Do-it-Yourselfers” of the world. Saltscapes wanted to celebrate the ways that you kept busy and spruced up your special spaces.
Here are the lucky winners who will receive a gift card for one free 3.64 litre of Beauti-Tone Paint and a one-year subscription to Saltscapes and East Coast Living magazines!

Photo Title: Made in Quebec Make Over in Nova Scotia
Photo Story: We've been slowly furnished our house since moving in last October. We had been hoping to finish the spare bedroom with pieces from yard sales this spring but with covid shutting all those down, the room looked as bare as ever. During August, yard sales picked back up again and the Cumberland County Museum held a large sale where I picked up this end table. It weighed much more than I had expected. I thought at first it was cheap pressboard but turns out, it's solid wood and made in Quebec. I happily lugged it to the car and gave it a make over with my favourite blue chalk paint. I’m happy how it turned out and can’t wait to have guests over to use it!

Photo Title: Sunset on the Strait
Photo Story: I feel so fortunate to live on the shore of Arisaig, Nova Scotia. In the summer the sun sets directly in front of us, how lucky are we?! We sit here most evenings enjoying the incredible natural beauty. I had a lot of fun putting this seating area together.

Photo Title: Grown Up Office
Photo Story: My boyfriend and I have a small business with an office in our home. We moved into the house October 2018 and never paid much attention to our space (others were priority). With the extra time at home we decided to finally set it up for a more grown up space. We have since updated all the chairs.

Photo Title: Swirling scraps
Photo Story: I find it just too easy to move from one sewing project to another without taking the time to clean and organize the leftover fabric. So my sewing area was just becoming a disaster zone. This year during our lockdown I made a quilt out of my scraps and then I took all the leftover scraps and sorted them by color, organizing them in this old library card catalogue. What a difference organization makes --now I can easily find the scraps I want and place my new scraps in the right spot.

Photo Title: Goodbye Embarrassing Entryway
Photo Story: I was always embarrassed that the first thing guests in our home had to see was the messy entryway! Coats everywhere, shoes piled on cheap plastic racks that were falling apart, a garbage can jammed in the corner - general chaos! My husband gave the space a fresh coat of paint, added built-in shelving that is just the perfect size, and we topped it off with inexpensive fabric bins to hold winter mitts, reusable shopping bags, extra sandals, ball caps, etc. One of my favourite parts is the slide-out waste bin (keeps all mess out of sight and keeps any scents at bay until it's time to take out the trash!)
