1/4 cup (50 mL) butter
2 squares unsweetened chocolate
1 1/2 cups (375 mL) granulated sugar
1/8 teaspoon (.5 mL) salt
1 cup (250 mL) less 1 tablespoon (15 mL) evaporated milk
1 teaspoon (5 mL) vanilla extract
In a heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat, melt butter and chocolate together, stirring constantly to prevent scorching. Add sugar and salt, stir to combine and remove from heat. Gradually stir in milk. Return to heat and cook, stirring constantly for a few minutes until sauce begins to thicken. Remove from heat and add vanilla. Serve while hot, or pour into tightly covered jars and store in the refrigerator for up to 2 months. Reheat in microwave before serving. Makes about 11/2 cups (375 mL).
