Spanish Onion & Cheddar Strata

Ingredients

2 medium, or about 3 cups (750 mL), Spanish onions, peeled and thinly sliced
12 slices white bread, crusts removed
3 cups (750 mL) grated sharp cheddar cheese
5 eggs, beaten
31/2 cups (875 mL) milk
1 tsp (5 mL) salt, or to taste
1/2 tsp (2 mL) dry mustard
1/2 tsp (2 mL) Worcestershire sauce
4 dashes hot pepper sauce
2 tbsp (30 mL) butter, melted

Directions

Separate onion slices into rings. Arrange 6 slices of bread in a buttered or sprayed 9x13-inch (23x33-cm) baking dish. Cut more bread, if necessary, to completely cover bottom of dish.

Sprinkle half the grated cheese evenly over bread; top with half the onion. Repeat layers of bread, cheese and onion.

In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, salt, dry mustard, Worcestershire, and hot pepper sauce. Pour mixture evenly over ingredients in dish.

Cover and refrigerate overnight, or at least 6 hours. Remove from refrigerator 1/2 hour before proceeding.

Uncover, drizzle with butter, and bake in a 350˚F (180˚C) oven for 50 to 60 minutes, or until set and nicely browned. Makes 9-12 servings.
