Saltscapes Road Trip Day 20

The MV Atlantic Vision docked in North Sydney right on time on a beautiful morning with an encouraging weather forecast (that we surely deserved after four and a half days of sunshine in 19 on the road).

Moving dogs and kennels and personal on-board items down seven decks was a bit if a chore, but the crew were very helpful - and the dogs noticeably thankful after 15 hours penned up.

We circled down to Louisbourg, curious about the origin of visitors to the fortress this year (we have been noting licence plates and guest books constantly) and have been pleased to see good evidence of Americans this year, in Newfoundland as well, at least on our travels. The Louisbourg guest book and parking lot census were no different, with strong showing as well from Ontario and Quebec.

Then it was down through Marion Bridge and the celebrated Myra River area on a hot day with folks enjoying the water everywhere. Rita MacNeil's Tea House was also right on route.

By previous arrangement, we were very kindly hosted by the Ben Eoin Beach Campground (even though they were packed) which is situated on a narrow peninsula reaching out into the Bras d'Or Lakes so it has waterfront on two sides, and a perfect placement for magnificent sunsets over the gentle hills on the other shore. Unsurprizingly there is a long waiting list for seasonal placements here.

In a typical manifestation of Cape Breton humour, the place was festooned with lights and decorations and they were enthusiastically celebrating Christmas in August - carols playing, turkey dinner, the whole business. Once again we noted the typical summer campground environment - families eating, playing together, relaxed adults socializing and happy kids reveling in freedom and the companionship of peers. By 10pm, it's all quiet.

We joined friends their for barbecued dinner and relaxed ourselves for the drive today had been one of the least arduous to date.
