Men, don’t you just love the feel of summer breezes on your freshly shaved faces?

If you’re an aficionado of a good warm lather shave, meet potter Sara Bonnyman and her original, beautiful shaving tool, the Moss Scuttle.

For more than 50 years, Bonnyman has thrown pots in her Tatamagouche, N.S., studio. Some years back, a local doctor asked her to make a device that would keep the water warm under the bowl where he made lather for his morning shave. With his description, she created what she describes as a double boiler for shavers: a pot to fill with hot water, with another pot on top where the brush could warm up.

Ceramics hold heat well, allowing Dr. Moss to prepare his brush, then make the lather in the upper bowl, using cream or soap as desired. He loved the scuttle, told all his friends, and the Moss Scuttle was born.

In her studio, Sara has a map of the world with a pin in place for everywhere a Moss Scuttle has gone to a happy, smooth-faced customer. She offers the scuttle in eight glazes, from creamy white to frog’s eyebrow green. Her favourite is the original slate-grey one.
