The Canteen on Portland

The Canteen in Dartmouth is the love child of chef Renée Lavallée and her husband Doug Townsend. The popular eatery began life on Ochterloney Street nestled above Two If By Sea and specialized in sandwiches, soups and salads, all using locally sourced products. The premise of the restaurant was being able to obtain amazing food at a great price in a short span of time; take-out was the restaurant’s main focus and locals ate it up. But all children must grow, and that’s just what The Canteen did, reinventing itself as a full-fledged eat-in restaurant located on Portland Street. The food is as good as it ever was, the restaurant itself is open, airy and beautifully appointed, and service is top notch. Lunch, dinner and Saturday brunches are hugely popular but locals were missing their take-out. A new family member was born: Little C. Adjacent (and connected) to The Canteen, Little C will offer the same experience that was available at the Ochterloney location, giving patrons their choice of dining experience without compromising on fabulous food.
