Stellarton, NS

Sam’s Pizza, located in Stellarton, NS, certainly has longevity on its side when it comes to being labelled an iconic hot spot.

Opened in 1962 by Greek immigrants George Kouyas and his brother Demetre, Sam’s was Pictou County’s first pizza restaurant and it quickly found its way into the hearts and bellies of locals, largely due to the now famous “Pictou County Pizza.” Made with a spicy brown tomato sauce rather than a traditional tomato sauce, Pictou County pizza has become legendary, and no one does it better than the originators. Although the restaurant is now being run by two of George’s children, George still hand-makes all the pizza sauce, a sauce that is now used by many other pizza restaurants wishing to offer a true Pictou County experience.

Sam’s has expanded its offerings to include some Greek items, as well as more traditional fare. They run fantastic weekly specials, such as 888 Wednesdays when they offer a variety of full-sized menu items for just $8.88. Thursday is buy-one get-one Chicken Caesar Pitas (come hungry or bring a friend), and on Saturdays it’s buy-one get-one free pizza night (any size), but be prepared to wait for a seat as the whole county seems to come out for this event.

Because Sam’s is located in our backyard we’re especially fond of (and familiar with) this particular hot spot. The food is fabulous, portions are generous, prices are reasonable, and it’s got what it really takes to be a true local hot spot—friendly staff who always make you feel like you’ve just arrived to the home of a good friend for a great meal. And, by the way, their Greek salad is amazing.

Open for lunch and dinner on Fridays, and evenings only for the remainder of the week. Take out is available also. For more information, call 902-752-5655 or
