Story by Alain Bossé

I’m forever amazed at the culinary genius that exists in our little part of the world. We are truly blessed with an abundance of talented chefs; one of whom can be found at the Tide & Boar Gastro Pub located in downtown Moncton, NB. Chef Mark Wapole and owner Chad Steeves have married their talents to come up with a food, drink and ambiance pairing that is a true winner.

The Tide & Boar is not a “small town secret” by any means; it has been recognized as one of Canada’s top 50 restaurants by Maclean’s magazine; Air Canada’s Enroute magazine named it as one of Canada’s favourite bars and the restaurant was featured on Food Networks popular show You Gotta Eat Here.

The restaurant boasts a lunch, a brunch and a dinner menu; all focused on offering food that reflects the season. For this reason, each menu changes on a regular basis, ensuring that as a guest you are eating what is freshest at that moment in time. The food is refined but not stuffy, elegant but not pretentious, adventurous but not intimidating. Braised Boar Meat Pie shares retail space with Fried Pickles and burgers are at home beside ribeyes.

Food is not the only area where careful attention has been given, especially for beer lovers—we suggest pairing the charcuterie board with a crisp cold IPA or a deep rich stout. The selection is impressive and all are brewed by owner Chad. Whatever you’re drinking, and whatever you have for a meal, do leave room for dessert, especially the Beeramisu, made with stout syrup as well as the usual ingredients found in tiramisu. It’s out of this world.

The Tide & Boar also offers a concert series with popular bands including Signal Hill, The Tea Party and Wintersleep; the musical offerings are diverse and happen regularly. There’s always a full schedule of performers available on the gastropub’s website.

This is one of those “well worth the drive” destinations for day-trippers out of Halifax, the Annapolis Valley, PEI and of course from throughout New Brunswick—good food, good beer and good music make for a great time out, any time of year.

Tide & Boar is located at 700 Main Street in Moncton. Hours and menus and concert listings can be found on their website at
