The Saltscapes Recipe contest is always a fun time of the year, as we gather to pick the top recipe submitted in the annual contest. Again this year, we have an amazing array of recipes to tempt your palette.

Our host for this year’s contest was Cynthia Thompson, as we gathered at her family’s amazing farm in Plymouth, near New Glasgow, NS. Cynthia is a true foodie and passionate about ensuring that we reproduced the recipes just as the cooks described them in their instructions.

Our judges did a fantastic job narrowing choices down to the grand, first, second, and third prize winners. As always, I had my own favourites, which I’ll keep to myself, but I was pretty close to the judges’ picks.

The recipe contest is always a good excuse to gather the team who work so hard behind the scenes, including Saltscapes co-founder Linda Gourlay, editor-in-chief Crystal Murray, senior editor Jodi DeLong, and photographer Steve Smith of VisionFire Studios.

The judges were pastry chef Helen Buchan (Mrs. MacGregor’s Shortbread), chef Shahzad Doctor (Fresh Atlantic Canada, Sobeys/Foodland), and Loretta Battist (registered nurse, foodie, and farmer extraordinaire).

We’re proud to present the winning recipes of the 2022 recipe contest, with heartfelt thanks and congratulations to all.

And a challenge for all home cooks and friends of the magazine: Take part in the upcoming 2023 contest. You can’t win if you don’t try!
